Denton TX Branch

Welcome to the Denton Texas Branch of the American Association of University Women!

The mission of the AAUW is to promote "equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change".  The organization achieves this mission through community outreach and political advocacy both locally and nationally.  Some examples include:

Legal Advocacy Fund - provides funding for women pursuing sexual discrimination cases

Educational Foundation  - provides funding for women attending graduate programs

Research - focuses on issues of gender equity in education

Advocacy Web Site- provides easy access to issues important to women and the means to express opinions to lawmakers

Community Outreach - encourages members to participate in programs to enhance women's opportunities and presence in higher education

The Denton Branch participates in the mission by:

Providing scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students attending Denton universities (Texas Woman's University and University of North Texas) and;

Co-sponsoring with the Lewisville Branch the Expanding Your Horizons conference (EYH) on careers in math and science for middle school girls .

Chiapas Project Update

In 2004, Donna Rohling talked to members about the Chiapas Project, an offshoot of the Grameen Project developed by 2006 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Muhammed Yunus.  The Grameen and Chiapas Projects provide small loans to women in underprivileged countries to start their own small businesses.  UNT has recently announced that they have started a fund-raising campaign for the Chiapas Project.  Used ink cartridges and cell phones are being collected for recycling.  The funds raised will go directly to the Chiapas Project.  If you would like more information, see the online article on the UNT web site.
