Speaker: Dr. Lisa Nagaoka, Associate Professor of Archaeology, UNT
Topic: Why so Few Women in Science?
Summary:
For the last few decades, the question of why more women do not pursue science
careers has been the focus of research across all educational levels. In
2005, this issue received national media attention when Harvard University
President Lawrence Summers suggested that one reason for the gender difference
in science may be the innate ability of men to excel in science and math as
compared to women. In this talk I present the trends in employment for
women in science careers, particularly in academia, explore the explanations
for the trends, and review suggestions for achieving parity.
